A construction worker was arrested on a charge of animal abuse after allegedly stealing and raping a customer’s dog, police in South Africa said.

Tshwane police said that they have arrested the 32-year-old man, who was not identified, after being accused of raping the dog named Stompie, which belongs to Shela Molema.

Molema told investigators that she caught the construction worker in bed with her dog. The man denied the allegations, but investigators found the dog’s hair in his bed and his DNA was on the dog.

Molema said that the incident began after she paid the man to fix her leaky roof. He left on Saturday night, and promised to return the next day.

Molema then realized that her 9-year-old dog was missing. The next morning, after the man did not come back to fix the roof, she went over to his house.

She knocked on the door, and when he did not answer, she opened it. Molema was horrified to see her dog in bed with the man.

The man tried to hide the dog, but it jumped out of the bed and ran to its owner. Molema notified the Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, and the police were called.
