A member of a neighborhood watch group is dead after he fired a shot to scare away thieves who were approaching his street, police in Nigeria said.
Lagos State police said that Ogundare Ekundayo, fire a shot in the air to scare away thieves, but the bullet hit an object, bounced back at him and wounded him in his head.
He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The victim was keeping an eye out for thieves on Osholanke Street around 4:00 a.m., when the incident unfolded.
There were, however, two of them in service on the fateful day.
His partner, Fatai Raimi, was arrested on a charge of gun possession. Police said that the victim was not properly trained in the use of a firearm and did not have a license to carry a weapon.
Police are also investigating whether Raimi was behind the death of his colleague.
Raimi denied the allegations, saying that he worked for Ekundayo, who recruited him to the neighborhood watch group.
