A young woman is lucky to be alive after her abdomen exploded following an emergency surgery to treat an infection, doctors in the United Kingdom said.
21-year-old Chloe Meade of Caldicot, underwent emergency surgery when she developed an abscess in her intestine earlier this year.
A few weeks later, the wound became infected, and the 8-inch scar on her abdomen exploded, leaving her with a gaping hole.
It took weeks for her scar to heal. Meade said that after her abdomen exploded, she was able to see straight into her stomach.
Meade has suffered from Crohn’s disease since she was 11 years old.
After suffering severe stomach pains earlier this year, doctors told her that she had an infected abscess and needed emergency surgery to save her life.
After the surgery, she was given steroids, which caused her body to swell and her scar to rip open.
