(Scroll down for video) A young girl was terrified about dying after being shot by a police officer at her home.

The police officer in Ohio, shot 4-year-old Ava Ellis, while responding to an emergency inside the home.

The incident took place after the girl’s mother, Andrea Ellis, cut her arm on a piece of broken glass in her home near Columbus. Her sister, who was at the home, called 911 for help.

When the police officer approached the house about 3:00 p.m., the family pet ran directly at the officer, police said.

The police fired his gun, but missed the dog, a boxer-terrier mix named Patches, and shot the girl instead.

The 4-year-old girl was hit in the right leg, shattering her bone. A neighbor who witnessed the shooting, called police.

Ava was taken to a hospital, where she underwent surgery. Andrea said that while they were on the way to the hospital, Ava asked several times, “Mommy, am I going to die?”

Ava was left with a large scar on her leg. She was released from the hospital and is recovering from her injury.

Columbus police said that they are investigating the incident.
