(Scroll down for video) A mayor who is looking to bring tourists to his city, is under fire for wearing a t-shirt with a naked photo of Madonna.
Darryn Lyons, Mayor of Geelong in Victoria, Australia, took photos with people, showing him wearing the t-shirt featuring Madonna hitchhiking without clothes.
The slogan on the shirt reads: “Gas, grass or a**, nobody rides for free.” The mayor wore the shirt at a beer festival in Geelong.
Many women were offended by the mayor’s lack of taste and said that the shirt is disrespectful to women.
Mayor Lyons said on Twitter: “I had no idea about the slogan of the t-shirt, which I bought years ago. I certainly did not wish to demean women.”
He later appeared on television to apologise for wearing the controversial t-shirt.
He said: “I have a great collection of pictures of both naked men and naked women, particularly naked women, and art right through my house and through every museum around the world. So what do you do? Close all the museums because of the beautiful human body?”
“At the end of the day people are entitled to their opinion and I have taken this situation extremely seriously. I apologize to people who were offended,” he added.
One woman said that the mayor “can’t seem to understand that this is insulting, sexist, demeaning and misogynistic.”
Lyons was a media personality and entrepreneur before he became mayor.
