Hamburg police said that the incident unfolded on Sunday, as the train moved into the Hoheluftbruecke station.

According to the police investigation, the 31-year-old mother identified as Jana, pushed her son, 11-year-old Leon, into the train as it approached the station.

The driver of the train told police that he was unable to stop before hitting the boy.

Jana then tried to escape from the scene, but was detained by other passengers until police arrived. Paramedics who arrived at the scene, worked forty minutes to free the boy from under the train.

At the hospital, doctors had no choice but to amputate the boy’s leg. Leon is said to be in critical condition , but is expected to survive.

Jana was arrested at the scene, and charged with attempted murder. A judge ordered her to undergo a psychiatric evaluation.

Investigators believe that the woman suffers from a mental illness.
