An Apple employee managed to steal $1 million worth of gift cards before selling them to the public for a fraction of the cost, police in New York said.

The New York Police Department said that they have arrested 24-year-old Ruben Profit of Queens, after being accused of stealing gift cards from his employer over a period of several months.

Profit was charged with grand larceny. He was booked into jail, and his bail was set at $20,000. He faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted.

According to the police investigation, Profit bought Apple gift cards using Visa gift, debit or prepaid credit cards. The total value of the gift cards was $997,000.

Police launched their investigation after Apple realized that the gift cards were bought with fraudulent cards. At the time of his arrest, profit was in possession of 51 fraudulent Visa and American Express gift cards.

He also had seven Apple gift cards worth $2,000 each. Profit sold each $2,000 gift card for $200.
