Three police officers were arrested on a charge of theft after allegedly stealing thousands of dollars in cash from a couple’s safe while executing a search warrant at their home during an investigation into organized crime, police in the United Kingdom said.
The Cardiff Crown Court heard that 47-year-old Sergeant Stephen Phillips, 38-year-old Constable Christopher Evans, and 35-year-old Constable Michael Stokes, helped themselves to the cash that belonged to Joedyn and Natalie Luben, as they were searching for drugs in their home.
The officers managed to open one safe at the couple’s home and pocketed the cash that was found inside.
A second safe was taken to a locksmith, who opened it before the officers took the cash for themselves.
In total, the officers are accused of stealing $46,000. The police officers spent the stolen cash at casinos and nightclubs.
All three police officers pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft.
