A woman suffered injuries to her face after being attacked by a woman for not speaking English at Applebee’s.

The woman went to the Applebee’s in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, where she was confronted by the woman who demanded that she speak English in the United States.

Asma Mohamed Jama, who is from Somalia, said the she was with family members when she spoke Swahili. Jodie Marie Bruchard-Risch, 43, overheard them and ordered her to speak English.

Jama said that she responded to Bruchard-Risch in English, and explained to her that she knows the language. Before Jama left Applebee’s, Bruchard-Risch threw a beer mug at her.

The glass cup shattered on her face. Jama needed 17 stitches for deep cuts on her lip, nose and eyelid. Jama, who lives in the United States for the past 15 years, said that she was left with physical and emotional scars.

Burchard-Risch was arrested and charged with third-degree assault. In 2011, Burchard-Risch pleaded guilty to assault for attacking another person.
