A father of the United Kingdom, was jailed for causing the death of his young daughter while he was drunk.
35-year-old Stephen Gallagher was babysitting his 14-week-old daughter Skylar Cowan Gallagher, when she died.
The baby’s mother, Angela Cowan, left the family home in County Durham, England, for a night out with friends and left the baby in her father’s care.
When the mother returned the next morning, she found her baby lying on the floor face down without a diaper. The baby was pronounced dead.
According to court documents, Gallagher has been drinking heavily while caring for his daughter. He had urinated under a fish tank, and he was asleep when Cowan came home.
When he woke up, Gallagher said that he had no idea what happened to his daughter. The Newcastle Crown Court heard that the baby died of asphyxiation.
The judge said that the evidence suggested that the father tried to change the baby’s diaper while he was heavily intoxicated and the girl ended up face down on the carpet.
Judge John Milford QC sentenced Gallagher to two-and-a-half years in prison for causing or allowing the death of a child.
