A man was arrested on a charge of burglary after breaking into his neighbor’s home and trying to drive away with his car, police in Florida said.
Now, 56-year-old Mark Nowak of Naples, has been sentenced to serve five years in prison after being convicted of burglary, theft and resisting arrest despite blaming his actions on sleepwalking.
According to the police investigation, Nowak cut through his neighbor’s fence and forced open a sliding door. He then turned off the alarm and raided the house.
When Nowak heard that police officers were arriving at the scene, he barricaded himself in a laundry room. He then tried to escape from the property by driving away in his neighbor’s vehicle.
Nowak told investigators that he accidentally mixed drugs before the robbery, causing him to lose his mind for a period of five hours.
In addition to serving five years in prison, Nowak was sentenced to ten years probation.
