(Scroll down for video) A babysitter in Australia, was arrested for burning a young child.

The man was accused of leaving the 10-month-old baby boy alone under boiling hot water until his skin started peeling off.

The injured child remains in a medically induced coma at Westmead Children’s Hospital in Sydney, with severe burns to over 40 percent of his body.

The child also had a significant head injury, which is believed to have been caused by the babysitter who was identified as 23-years-old Atare Tepania.

Tepania, who is not the child’s father, allegedly told police that he placed the boy in the bathtub after he vomited. He then turned on the hot water and went outside to smoke a cigarette and to charge his phone.

Prosecutor Daniel Winter asked the judge at the Penrith Court, to hold the suspect without bail because he showed little remorse for inflicting terrible wounds on the child.

Winter said that the suspect was more concerned about losing custody of his own son if he gets locked up.

The New South Wales (NSW) Department of Community Service had recently allowed the suspect to resume having custody of his biological son after he was previously taken away.

The 10-month-old boy’s parents, who do not live together, are devastated over the incident. They are at the baby’s bedside and hope that he recovers.

Tepania is the boyfriend of the baby’s 21-year-old mother. He was accused of inflicting the life-threatening injuries to the child. The baby was found with significant burns to his head, neck, chest and back.

He is said to be in critical but stable condition.
