A man was arrested on a charge of animal abuse after allegedly using a baseball bat to beat his neighbor’s dog because it barked at him, police in Japan said.

Utsunomiya police said that they have arrested 42-year-old Kenichi Atsuumi, after being accused of beating his neighbor’s dog until its head split open.

According to the police investigation, the incident unfolded on Sunday afternoon, as Atsuumi came home from work and found the dog barking at him.

Atsuumi became angry and went into his house to grab a baseball bat. He approached his neighbor’s house and attacked the dog while it was chained to its kennel.

The owner of the dog ran out of his home after hearing the commotion. He found his dog bleeding from the head, nose and mouth.

The dog suffered concussions, but survived the attack. During questioning, Atsuumi told investigators that he lost his cool because the dog was barking at him.
