A thief in Zimbabwe, died after running away from children who spotted him stealing a cellphone.
Police said that the 18-year-old thief died when he fell into the storm drain while fleeing from the group of children who chased him.
The suspect, who was identified as Future Mkhize, died at the hospital. Victoria Falls District Chief Superintendent Jairos Chiwona said that they are investigating the incident.
“I can confirm that we have received a report of a suspect who died while fleeing a group of children after stealing a cellphone,” he said.
According to police, children were playing in the streets when they allegedly spotted Mkhize, stealing the phone and they ran after him.
Mkhize, who was homeless, took the phone from a car that belong to Anderson Shoniwa. The car was parked outside a house in Chinotimba.
Shonhiwa, who is employed by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe, told police that he left his cellphone in the front of his car and the windows were slightly down.
Mkhize allegedly fished out the phone about 2:00 p.m., and he ran away. Shoniwa’s wife Makombe, realized that the cellphone was missing and alerted her husband, who immediately went to file a police report.
On his way to the station, Shoniwa saw Mkhize being chased by children who were shouting “thief.” The phone was recovered, and Mkhize who was injured while falling into a storm drain, was taken to Victoria Falls District Hospital.
He succumbed to his injuries at 6:00 p.m.
