A mother and grandmother were arrested on a charge of allowing death after they withheld water from a 7-month-old boy until he died, police in the United Kingdom said.
Now, 24-year-old Jessica Price and 62-year-old Angela Price, both of Luton, were sentenced to serve 8 years in prison after being found guilty of causing or allowing death.
They were also found guilty of cruelty to a person under 16 years old by failing to provide adequate food and drink, and cruelty to a child by failing to obtain medical aid.
The Luton Crown Court heard that the mother of baby Imran, Jessica Price, and grandmother, Angela Price, each had responsibility for him and both failed to adequately care for him to ensure he was properly nourished and hydrated.
They lived in cramped, cluttered and smoky conditions with a pattern of resistance to health professionals. According to the police investigation, Jessica Price called an ambulance after finding her son unconscious.
When paramedics arrived at the scene, they determined that Imran had been dead for a few days. The cause of his death was dehydration.
The mother and grandmother denied cruelty. They offered no explanation for how he died, but were found guilty.
Imran was willfully neglected at the hands of his mother and grandmother, to the extent that he lost 17 percent of his body weight in just nine days, the court was told.
He also had what doctors described as one of the worse cases of diaper rash they had ever seen. Had it not been for the cruel and callous neglect, Imran would still be alive today, the court was told.
