A woman was jailed after she was found guilty of raping her nephew.

Police in South Africa, arrested the woman after the boy’s mother filed a complaint.

The Maphumulo Regional Court in KwaZulu-Nata, heard how the 44-year-old woman asked the victim’s mother to allow him to escort her to home.

The 44-year-old woman said that she was afraid to walk alone late at night, and asked if the 13-year-old nephew can walk home with her and spend the night.

The victim’s mother agreed to let her son sleep over at his aunt’s house in Maphumulo, as they were a close knit family.

The her surprise, the teenager came home crying in the morning, and told her that he was raped by his aunt. He added that he escaped while she was still sleeping, Police Major Thulani Zwane said.

The mother immediately filed a police report, and a case of rape had been opened at the Maphumulo police station.

The KwaDukuza Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit took over the investigation and the aunt was arrested.

In court, the aunt was found guilty of rape. She was sentenced to 15 years in prison.

KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni said the sentence was suitable for the perpetrator.

“She was supposed to protect the boy, but was the one who hurt him. I hope this sentence will send a strong message to other people who are thinking of committing the same crime,” Ngobeni said.
