A fitness coach was arrested on a charge of recklessly transmitting HIV after being accused of intentionally infecting women with HIV by claiming that he is allergic to condoms, police in the United Kingdom said.
Now, 46-year-old Simon Arthur James of Bristol, has been sentenced to serve 5 years in prison after being found guilty of recklessly transmitting HIV.
According to the police investigation, James was diagnosed with HIV 20 years ago, but failed to use contraception, attend hospital appointments or take his antiretroviral medication.
On two occasions, when his HIV status was discovered, he claimed that he was allergic to latex condoms and that he was taking his medication.
The fitness coach also insisted on having unprotected sex, saying that it was safe and that he had never infected anyone before.
James was advised of the dangers of unsafe sex and the importance of taking his medication by healthcare professionals on countless occasions, but he ignored them.
As a result, his victims have suffered greatly.
