(Scroll down for video) A new mother received terrible news on the day that should have been the happiest day of her life.
Crystal Matrau-Belt, 24, of Michigan, gave birth to a baby over the weekend, without her fiance or mother at her side.
At the time, she had no idea that her fiance and mother were killed in a car accident while rushing to the hospital for the delivery.
“Speed seems to be a significant factor in the accident that killed Emil Skokan, 34, and Peggy Nichols, 53,” Kalamazoo County Undersheriff Paul Matyas said.
Matrau-Belt gave birth to her son Jeremiah by Cesarean section at the Bronson Methodist Hospital. She was admitted, because of high blood pressure on Friday, and her doctor decided to induce labor.
Three hours after the birth of her son, Matrau-Belt had not seen Skokan or Nichols. Although her family knew of the deaths, they decided to wait until after the birth to break the tragic news.
When Matrau-Belt learned about the tragic deaths, she said that the last time she heard from her fiance was when he sent her a text message, asking if she needed anything and he told her he loved her.
Matrau-Belt said that she suffered fertility problems and miscarriages before the birth of Jeremiah.
“I want to celebrate the birth of Jeremiah, but the loss of my fiance, whom I loved so much, and my mom at the same time, is a struggle to try to balance. To lose both at a time like this, is very difficult,” Matrau-Belt said.
The new mother said that when she holds her son, she sees her fiance.
“I’ll pick it up and see him,” said Emil Matrau-Beld. “It’s hard, but just to know that I have a piece of Emil helps a little bit,” she added.
