A group of six animal rights activists were arrested on a charge of assault after allegedly beating two innocent people who were accused of torturing cats, police in China said.

Shanghai police said that the activists assaulted the two innocent victims despite knowing that they were not the people behind a series of cat abuse videos that were uploaded to the Internet.

According to the police investigation, the six activists lured the victims identified as Liu and Yi, to a forest, where they were tortured.

One suspect threw a glass bottle filled with cat and dog feces at the man, while another attacker uses scissors to cut the hair of the woman.

Before leaving the forest, the activists forced open the mouths of the victims and shoved in cat feces. Both Liu and Yi suffered bruises all over their body.

The activists were all charged with picking quarrels and provoking trouble. If convicted, they face up to five years in prison.
