A man was arrested on a charge of rape after finding a woman with Down syndrome in the street before taking her to his home, where he raped her, police in Ireland said.
Now, 34-year-old Faisal Ellahi of Dublin, has been found guilty of rape, sexual assault and having sex with a mentally impaired person.
According to the police investigation, the victim and her mother were walking in the street before they became separated.
Ellahi approached the victim, who was born with Down syndrome, and took her to his house, where she was raped.
Ellahi claimed that the woman consented to the acts. The victim told investigators that Ellahi closed the door behind them and she was afraid that he was going to stab or kill her.
She wanted to leave, but Ellahi did not let her. At some point, she got scared and started banging on the door. The court heard from 16 women who were approached in the street by Ellahi.
A woman who lived near Ellahi, said that he tried to force his way into her house after she returned from a night out. Ellahi admitted sexual contact with the victim, and said that he did not know she had a mental disability.
He said that he never heard of Down syndrome until his arrest.
