Many people in Africa, are outraged after man who raped a young girl, was appointed to be an ambassador against sexual violence.
The United Nations Human Rights expert have also criticized Zambia, after it pardoned the man who was convicted of raping the 14-year-old girl.
Clifford Dimba, who is also known as General Kanene, is a well-known singer in the county. He was appointed as the ambassador to fight against gender violence.
Dimba was convicted and sentenced to 18 years in prison, but he was pardoned by President Edgar Lungu, after serving just one year.
Since his release, the singer has been involved in two further incidents of violence against women, according to the United Nations Council of Human Rights.
“The outrageous release and appointment of Dimba as an ambassador to fight against gender-based violence not only traumatizes the victims all over again but discourages other victims from reporting similar offenses,” said Dubravka Simonovic, UN Special Rapporteur on violence against women.
“Appointing Dimba undermines the strong message against sexual abuse of women and girls and trivializes the serious nature of these offenses,” Simonovic added.
“Dimba has been placed in a prominent position and he is even portrayed as a role model to fight violence against women,” Simonovic explained.
UN experts have called on the Government of Zambia, to withdraw Dimba from the position.
