A man was arrested on charges of human trafficking after allegedly selling his niece as a sex slave, police in Nigeria said.
Lagos State Police said that 27-year-old Kelvin Okorie, sold his sister’s 15-year-old daughter to sex workers operating in Libya for N10,000 ($50).
Okorie was one of five people arrested in connection with the incident. Okorie told investigators that he did not expect the traffickers would force his niece into sexual slavery.
He said his friends in Libya claimed that could help the young girl find a job at a supermarket or gas station. However, when the girl arrived in Libya, she became a sex slave.
When the parents of the girl learned about the plight of their daughter, they demanded that she return to the country. The gang extorted from the parents $5,000 in exchange for their daughter’s freedom, which they paid.
