Vladislav 'Sam' Samsonov of Boca Grande, loved his job where he worked for the past 29 years. He often gave sweet treats to children who passed his toll booth.

Samsonov said that throughout the 29 years working at the Boca Grande Causeway, he used his own money if a driver did not have enough cash or if there had been a mistake.

App to reunite lost dogs with their owners using facial recognition technology

Finding Rover
By: Chan Yuan

(Scroll down for video) Pet owners can sleep better at night, knowing that if their dogs get lost, they can be tracked down with an app, using facial recognition technology.

Finding Rover, which was developed by John Polimeno and the University of Utah, uses facial recognition technology to reunite lost dogs with their owners.

A team of facial recognition experts studied technology used in prisons and casinos to develop algorithms for pets, pinpointing their unique facial features.

The technology has an accuracy rate of up to 99 percent, and the app already helped more than 600 lost dogs. The app works by uploading a photo of the dog and its current location.

Animal shelters and other app users upload images of found dogs. The system then tries to match the images of lost and found dogs using facial recognition technology.

If a match is found, the app notifies the owner and the finder.

Finding Rover has over 100,000 users. The app also signed up over 100 animal shelters from around the world and several thousand veterinarians.

Currently, Finding Rover only helps find lost dogs, but cats will soon be added to the app.
