Grandparents in Canada, are outraged after a court ordered them to stop speaking to their granddaughter about religion.

A couple of devout Jehovah's Witness, have been ordered by a British Columbia provincial court judge not to speak about religion to their 4-year-old granddaughter.

The grandparents lost their bid for unsupervised visits with the girl because they insisted on taking her to church with them despite the repeated objections of the child's mother.

Judge Edna Ritchie ordered the grandparents to have supervised visits with the child, who was identified only as A.W.

“There are many people with deeply held religious beliefs that do not discuss those views in front of others, and specifically not in front of children,” judge Ritchie wrote.

The judge also said that unless the grandparents can convince the court that they can meet the wishes of the child’s mother, then their time with her will be monitored and limited.

The Family Law Act states that only a parent or guardian has the right to make decisions on religious education, and the child’s mother has sole custody of her.

According to court documents, the child’s father was “expelled” from the faith.

He testified in court that he has little contact with his parents. He does not pay child support as he gave up his parental rights to the girl.

However, the grandparents were determined to have contact with her granddaughter, and the girl's mother allowed it as she felt it was important for them to be part of her life. She previously allowed them unsupervised access.

However, she changed her mind after they began attempting to force their faith on the girl. The mother said that when her daughter is older, she will make a decision if she wants to join the religion.

The judge said that it was not fair to put the child in a holy war between her mother and grandparents.
