An elected official was left red-faced after he was caught urinating on the street.

Jackie Burns of Scotland, angered many people when he announced funding cuts to public toilets.

Now, he might just reconsider the issue after he was fined for urinating in the street. Burns, who is deputy leader of the South Lanarkshire Council, was fined £40 (about $60) for the shameful lack of judgment after a police officer saw him urinating on the street.

Burns said that he was at a taxi stand in Hamilton, when he needed to use the bathroom. He walked to the side and relieved himself in public.

“I am embarrassed by the incident and I have apologized,” Burns said.

Earlier this year, Burns announced the need to close public toilets throughout the area, a move that many residents and businesses vehemently opposed.

He blamed the closures on spending cuts. More than 70 businesses demanded that the public bathrooms stay open.

Officials put the decision off for three months to allow the community to take over the maintenance of the facilities, but the bathrooms eventually closed.
