(Scroll down for video) A father was arrested on a charge of child abuse after allegedly sitting on his son while playing video games with his girlfriend, police in Florida said.

The Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office said that they have arrested 31-year-old James Dearman, after being accused of pinning his 6-year-old son to a couch until he stopped breathing.

Dearman was charged with one count of aggravated child abuse. He was booked into the Sarasota County Jail, and he was denied bail.

According to the police investigation, on Thursday around 11:00 p.m., Dearman called the police to say that his son was unconscious and had stopped breathing.

Paramedics came to the home, and they took the child to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Doctors called the police after noticing bruises on the child’s back.

Police questioned Dearman and learned that he and his girlfriend, Ashley Cole, were playing video games in the living room.

Dearman made his son and 7-year-old brother stand with his face to the wall.

When his son turned his back to look at the television, Dearman became angry and placed the child on the sofa, where he was forced to lie on his side with his face to the pillows.

Dearman then used his body weight to pin his child down while he and his girlfriend kept playing video games. His son shouted that he could not breathe and asked to use the bathroom to urinate.

After a few minutes, he fell unconscious. Dearman and his girlfriend left the child on the couch and went to the garage to smoke a cigarette.

When they were done, Dearman called the police. The 7-year-old brother was unhurt, and remains in the protective custody of the Department of Children and Families.
