The Lakeland Police Department said that officers shot 44-year-old Wesley Lee Cook, after police officers came to his home in order to help 46-year-old Shannon K. Wood.

Cook was shot four times, and he was taken to the Lakeland Regional Health hospital, where he is said to be in critical condition.

The police officer who shot Cook, was placed on paid administrative leave, pending the outcome of the investigation.

According to the police investigation, Wood came to the house on Monday around 8:30 p.m., in order to remove her belongings from the home located at 1563 Turtle Rock Drive.

She called the police for help because she was concerned about her safety. Officers Paul Dunn, 46, and David Bell responded to the scene, and they were informed that Cook had two guns.

The officers knocked on the door and Cook answered naked and holding what appeared to be a black gun. The officers retreated and ordered Cook to drop the gun, but he refused.

Cook was shot four times.
