Man cuts off his hand and crashes car before smoking a cigar while waiting for ambulance

A man was jailed after he cut off his hand and made it look like it was an accident.

Police in Spain, said that 42-year-old Miguel B.P. of Nules, cut off his hand in an elaborate insurance scheme.

Miguel, who works as a farmer, cut off his right hand and staged a car accident to claim insurance money.

According to court documents, the farmer was having financial problems and was struggling to pay his mortgage when he came up with a plan to take advantage of his insurance policies.

Prosecutors said that Miguel, took a sharp blade and cut his own hand to collect the insurance. The prosecutors said that it was unclear whether he did it by himself or he had assistance.

According to court documents, Miguel stopped the bleeding and then drove himself to a road that has a sharp turn, and crashed the car.

He got out of the car and set it on fire before calling emergency services. When police and firefighters arrived at the scene, they found Miguel relaxing and smoking a cigar.

The farmer then filed claims with eight different insurance companies. However, after an extensive investigation, police determined that it was not an accident.

The Castellon Provincial Court sentenced Miguel to four years in prison, and he was ordered to return the $365,500 in insurance money that he received.

He also received an additional fine of $3,275.
