(Scroll down for video) A girl was killed by a bullet that was meant for her father.
12-year-old Ciara Meyer, of Duncannon, Pennsylvania, died after she was accidentally hit by a bullet that ricocheted off her father’s arm.
Police came to the family’s home in Penn Township, to serve them with an eviction notice, officials said. 57-year-old Donald Meyer, the girl’s father, came to the door with a rifle.
During their conversation, he allegedly pointed the loaded rifle at the officer’s chest. That’s when Officer Clarke Steele fired a single shot.
The round traveled through the father’s arm, shattering his bone. The bullet then left his arm and hit his daughter, who was standing behind him.
Ciara Meyer, who was home from school because she was sick, died of the gunshot wound. The incident occurred around 10:00 a.m.
Police said that employees of the apartment complex were on the scene for the eviction and witnessed the incident. The girl was pronounced dead at the scene, while her father was flown to Penn State Hershey Medical Center.
He was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, making terroristic threats and reckless endangerment.
Court records show that after he is released from the hospital, he will be held in the Perry County Prison without bail.
The family owed $1,780.85 in back rent and costs. Officer Steele is off the job while an investigation is being conducted, but he will likely not face any charges.
