A boy cut off his own hand to punish himself after he mistakenly raised it during a lecture at a mosque, police on Pakistan said.

The 15-year-old boy of Lahore, cut his own hand, believing that he had committed blasphemy.

Police said that Imam Shabbir Ahmed was delivering a sermon at a village in Punjab, when the boy misunderstood him and raised his hand at the wrong time.

Police chief Nosher Ali described how the imam told people at a mosque that those who love the Prophet Muhammad always say his prayers.

He then he asked those in the crowd if anyone had stopped praying.

Teenager Mohammad Anwar raised his hand by mistake after he apparently did not hear the question correctly. The imam called him a blasphemer.

The distraught boy then went home and cut off his hand. He returned to the mosque, put his hand in a platter and presented it to the imam, the police chief said.

Ali said that he has seen a video in which the teenager’s parents proclaim their pride over what their son has done.

Police have arrested the imam of the mosque on a charge of inciting violence.
