A man is devastated after he was banned from planning his husband’s funeral because gay marriage is not recognized in Australia.
Marco Bulmer-Rizzi of London, England, was heartbroken when his husband David Bulmer-Rizzi, 32, died in Adelaide, during their honeymoon.
David died on Saturday, during the last stop on their honeymoon. He fell down stairs and cracked his skull. He was rushed to a nearby hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries.
While planning the funeral, Marco was informed that he cannot make the decisions as gay marriage is not recognized in the country.
Officials informed Marco that David’s death certificate will read “never married,” and all decisions surrounding the death will have to be approved by David’s father.
Many people are now calling on the government to recognize same-sex marriages performed overseas.
