An elderly woman died after trying to help her husband who fell out of a wheelchair and onto the ground in freezing temperatures, police in Georgia said.
The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said that 86-year-old Maria Riffe, ran to help 74-year-old Roy Riffe, who fell out of his motorized wheelchair while riding outside his home.
The incident unfolded on Thursday around 5:30 p.m., when Maria Riffe watched as her husband fell out of his wheelchair outside her home located at 135 Flat Rock Circle.
Maria Riffe, who walks with the help of a walker, fell while trying to help her husband. As a result, the couple was unable to move.
During the night, Roy Riffe watched helplessly as his wife froze to death. They were not discovered until 10:30 a.m. the following day.
Roy Riffe survived the cold night because he was wearing a jacket and warm pants, but his wife only had a light dress. He was transported to the Putnam General, where he was treated and released.
