A man was arrested on a charge of assault after allegedly stabbing a paramedic who was taking him to a hospital while suffering from a stroke, police in the United Kingdom said.

Thames Valley police said that they have arrested the 43-year-old man after he was taken to the hospital to be treated for a stroke.

He was charged with one count of grievous bodily harm.

According to the police investigation, the stroke victim was found next to a telephone booth on Old Stoke Road, before being taken by the ambulance to a nearby hospital.

As the ambulance was making its way to the hospital, the patient stabbed one of the ambulance employees in the abdomen with what appeared to be a screwdriver.

The 30-year-old paramedic was treated by his colleagues and then transferred to the Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

His injuries were not considered to be life threatening.

Investigators said that this was a completely unprovoked attack on a paramedic as he was just doing his job, trying to save the life of a member of the public.
