A police officer died while running from his colleagues and pretending to be a criminal, police in South Africa said.
Police said that target practice in Pietermaritzburg, ended in tragedy when Sergeant Malcolm Goodwin, was shot and killed by colleagues.
The tragedy took place at the Mountain Rise shooting range, where agents practice shooting colleagues pretending to be thugs.
A police officer who was part of the training, said that before starting a shooting session of live targets, all firearms are checked to ensure that no live ammunition are in the magazines.
Officials are trying to determine what went wrong and how one round of ammunition remained in the gun during practice.
The officers were all from the Durban Flying Squad, which specializes in organized crime.
Goodwin was running from his colleagues who pointed guns at him. Officers stopped the chase when they realized that he fell to the ground and he was wounded.
Goodwin suffered a gunshot wound to the head. He was taken to a hospital, where he died of his injuries.
The two officers who had the guns, were close friends and colleagues. They were very distraught over the incident.
Police are investigating the incident and it is likely that the officer who fired the shot will face charges of culpable homicide.
