(Scroll down for video) A man who was arrested on a charge of drug possession, died after swallowing a large amount of drugs while in police custody, police in South Africa said.
Johannesburg police said that a large protest broke out outside the Arwyp Medical Centre in Kempton Park, after friends of the 33-year-old suspect learned about his death.
The suspect’s friends claim that he was beaten and choked to death inside a police van.
Police however, said that the suspect who was arrested on a charge of drug possession, swallowed a large amount of cocaine in order to destroy evidence.
As a result of the drugs, the suspect died in police custody.
Police said that they were forced to fire stun grenades and rubber bullets at the group of protesters.
About 20 protesters suffered minor injuries and 2 suffered moderate injuries following the riot. Most suffered from gas inhalation.
Police estimated the crowd at 500 people.
