A 50-year-old prison inmate who suffered from a mental illness, died after guards forced him to stay in a hot shower for several hours as punishment for defecating in his cell, police in Florida said.
People expressed their outrage after the Miami-Dade Medical Examiner ruled that the death of Darren Rainey, was an accident.
According to the police investigation, Rainey, a mentally ill man, died while locked in a shower of boiling hot water, which was rigged to inflict punishment on prisoners.
Guards put the schizophrenic man in the shower as punishment for defecating in his cell. Rainey was tortured for hours before he collapsed and died.
When the guards finally checked on the prisoner, he was lying on his back and he was dead. A prisoner whose cell was near the shower, said that he heard screams coming from the room.
He heard Rainey promising that he won’t do it again and he said that he was sorry, but nobody cared. Rainey was sentenced to serve two years in prison after being convicted of drug possession.
