Sick man struck and killed by car after jumping out of moving ambulance

(Scroll down for video) A sick man who was being transported to a hospital, died after jumping out of an ambulance and getting struck by a car, police in New York said.

The New York Police Department said that 51-year-old Frank Ligrnetta of Long Island, jumped out of the moving ambulance before being struck by a car whose driver fled from the scene.

Ligrnetta was in the back of the ambulance operated by Hunter EMS, when he jumped from the back door and into traffic on Nicolls Road, around 7:00 p.m. on Monday.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. The dark sedan that hit Ligrnetta, fled from the scene, police said. The ambulance was transporting Ligrnetta from Stony Brook University Hospital to Brunswick Hospital Center.

The ambulance was seized by police as evidence.
