Women’s rights activists in Italy, are angry after a judge found an employer not guilty of sexual assault despite the fact that he admitted to groping his female employees.

The judge in Sicily, ruled that the employer was not guilty of sexual assault because he groped women as a joke and not for sexual gratification.

A 20-year-old woman accused the 65-year-old employer of touching her private parts. A second woman said that her boss treated her like a little girl and spanked her on the behind.

The court found that the employer indeed behave in this manner, but found him not guilty as the offenses did not mount to a sexual assault.

The judge said that he believes the employer did not touch his staff for sexual pleasure. He behaved in an immature way and has an inappropriate sense of humor, the judge said.

A women’s rights group said that they were surprised and baffled by the decision.

The decision ignores the sensitivity and dignity of working women, and at the same time allows sexual violence in the workplace, the Italian Labor Union said.
