A police officer was arrested on a charge of murder after killing his wife following an argument, police in the United Kingdom said.
Now, 49-year-old Adrian Goldsmith of Northamptonshire, has been sentenced to serve life in prison after being convicted of murder.
According to the police investigation, Goldsmith beat his wife Jill to death on the porch of their home. The couple had been experiencing difficulties, both individually and in their relationship.
Goldsmith called for help, but when officers arrived, Jill, 49, was already dead. Goldsmith had bludgeoned her with a number of different blunt objects, including a hammer and a can of paint.
Goldsmith claimed that his wife had attacked him, that she had been on drugs and was coming at him with a knife, putting him in fear of his life.
The evidence however, suggested that this was a one-sided attack using a shocking level of violence.
Goldsmith had no signs of injury that could be expected from such a struggle, apart from injuries he later admitted were self-inflicted.
As a trained police officer, he would have been more than capable of restraining his wife, who was much smaller than him, without the need to use excessive force and certainly not to kill her.
