A nursing home employee was arrested on a charge of murder after allegedly killing several patients by throwing them off a balcony, police in Japan said.

Kanagawa police said that they have arrested 23-year-old Hayato Imai, after being accused of killing 87-year-old Tamio Ushizawa.

While being questioned about the murder, Imai admitted to killing two women, 86 and 96 years old, by throwing them off a balcony.

Imai was charged with three count of murder. He was booked into jail, and was denied bail.

According to the police investigation, Ushizawa and two women lost their lives after being thrown off balconies at the S Amille Kawasaki Saiwaicho nursing home within a relatively short time.

Ushizawa fell from a fourth-floor balcony last year.

A month later, an 86-year-old woman fell from the same balcony, and another month later, a 96-year-old woman fell from a sixth-floor balcony.

Imai was at the facility when the three died. Before his arrest, he told police that he was not involved in the incidents.

Imai was also charged with theft for stealing a purse containing 25,000 yen ($219) in cash from the room of a 70-year-old woman.
