Three classmates died after they fell into a sewer containing boiling water, police in Russia said.

Siberia police said that the three dead boys were discovered cooking inside the heated sewer, which is used a storm drain during the freezing winter season.

The 8-year-old boys were identified as Daniil Slisarenko, Alexander Sanko, and Daniil Vinnik, all of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The water temperature in the sewer was 176 degrees at the time the boys were found floating inside.

According to the police investigation, two of the boys had died trying to rescue their classmate who fell into the sewer on his way home from school.

A broken wooden cover was found inside the sewer, leading police to believe that it collapsed under the weight of the snow.

When the boys did not arrive home in the evening, their parents reported them missing. Police and volunteers searched for the boys, and their bodies were found in the sewer.

The mayor announced that he will cover the funeral cost of the boys.
