(Scroll down for video) An man of Colorado, shot three police officers before he was shot and killed by an officer.
Former Green Party state senate candidate Martin Wirth was angry when police officers tried to serve him an eviction notice.
Wirth, 58, was facing eviction from his own house because he stopped paying his mortgage about four years ago. When Park County Sheriff’s deputies came to his home in the Friendship Ranch subdivision in Bailey, he came out armed.
Wirth shot and killed Corporal Nate Carrigan, a 10-year veteran of the sheriff’s office.
Another officer underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries and is in critical condition. The third officer was treated and released from a hospital after a bullet grazed his ear.
Wirth was known to be anti-government and anti-police. He often posted disparaging comments about them on his Facebook page.
Many of Wirth’s followers came out to support him. They held signs reading rest in peace.
Andrea Merida, co-chair of the Green Party of Colorado, said she had known Wirth for years and she “did not find him to be unstable.”
“He is absolutely a victim of the foreclosure crisis in America,” she said. In a joint statement, Merida and Green Party co-chair Bill Bartlett called Wirth a “friend to the oppressed who always supported the least fortunate among us.”
