A man who was arrested on a charge of contempt of court for not paying his medical bills, collapsed and died while in a police holding cell, police in Utah said.
Brigham City police said that 45-year-old Rex Iverson, died just several hours after being locked in a cell at the Box Elder County Jail.
The arrest warrant was issued through the Tremonton City Justice Court. A police officer found Iverson unresponsive in the cell.
Lifesaving efforts were started by officers on the scene. Brigham City Ambulance responded and transported Iverson to the Brigham City Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
There is no indication of foul play of any kind at this time.
Iverson was charged with contempt of court after he failed to pay medical bills in the amount of $2,400 in connection with an ambulance ride to the hospital.
Breanne Terry said: “Rex was a good neighbor and a good helping hand. He had a huge heart. He always helped us around the yard and with other projects we had going on.
“My kids enjoyed him also. We can say that he was adopted into our little family, and he will be missed a lot.”
