60-year-old man arrested for chasing thief who stole car with child inside

(Scroll down for video) A man in Florida, was shocked when police handcuffed him for attempting to be a good Samaritan.

60-year-old Charles William Long learned that a man stole a car and a child was inside the vehicle. He followed the car at a high speed.

Police said that the incident began when Angelica Luz Marrero, called police and reported that someone stole her car with her son inside.

Clearwater police began a pursuit of the stolen car in an attempt to get back the 3-year-old boy. Her car has a GPS device, and officers were soon behind him.

Officers realized that Long joined the police chase, and he was weaving in and out of traffic at 85 miles per hour, according to the police report.

Long finally stopped the pursuit when he crashed into a police cruiser. He was arrested on a charge of reckless driving with property damage or injury.

Long, who was never in trouble with the law, said that he just wanted to help. However, he said that he now learned his lesson to stay out of the way and allow police to do their jobs.

The chase ended when the car thief crashed into a tree. Police realized that the woman’s child was not in the car. When questioning the mother, she admitted that she lied about the child being in the car and that her son was at his playgroup.

Marrero and the boy’s father, Nestor Gerardo Badillo, were charged with false report of a crime and misuse of 911. Marrero also faces charges of possession of marijuana.

According to the police, Marrero said that her car was stolen a few weeks ago, and it took police a long time to respond she tricked police into believing that their child was in the car.

The car thief, Stevie Gamble Jr., was charged with grand theft of a vehicle, driving without a license, fleeing or eluding at high speed and reckless driving.
