(Scroll down for video) A new supermarket in Denmark, is trying to fight poverty by selling food that is past its expiration date at a steep discount of 50 percent.
WeFood opened its first branch on Monday in Copenhagen.
The store is selling only food that is already past expiration date. Health officials said that the expiration date that does not indicate safety, but rather the quality of the food.
In fact, most food items remain edible well beyond the expiration date. Until now, all food items that past its expiration date were thrown in the garbage.
WeFood will take advantage of the expired food, offering prices of up to 50 percent lower than any other grocery store in the city.
The WeFood supermarket is run by volunteers, and the profits go to an NGO (Non Governmental Organization) behind its existence.
The organization said that if the first WeFood store is successful, it would open more of them in other cities in the country.
