A father was arrested on a charge of child endangerment after allegedly leaving his little daughter alone in a freezing car because he has a prosthetic foot, police in Ohio said.

Richmond Heights police said that they have arrested the 28-year-old man, who was not identified, after they found his 1-year-old daughter and a dog alone in the car.

He was charged with one count of child endangerment.

According to the police, around 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, officers responded to the parking lot of the Planet Fitness located on Richmond Road, on a report of child and dog alone in a car.

Police waited next to the car until the father approached them.

When police asked him why he left the child and dog in the car, he said that he did not take the 13-month-old girl into the shopping center with him, because he has a prosthetic foot.

The car was unlocked with the key in the ignition. The temperature outside was 25 degrees. A witness said that the man was away from the car for more than an hour.

The child was handed over to the Lake County Child Protective Services. The girl was taken to a hospital for evaluation. She was later released to her grandfather.

The dog was removed by an animal control officer and will be in custody until a family member takes it.
