A mother was arrested on a charge of child abandonment after allegedly dumping her son at a hospital because he was rude and out of control, police in Utah said.

West Jordan police said that they have arrested 36-year-old Kathy Sherrer, after being accused of taking her 8-year-old son to the Jordan Valley Medical Center, leaving him there and driving away alone.

Sherrer was charged with one count of child abandonment and one count of child abuse.

According to the police investigation, the young boy entered the front door of the Jordan Valley Medical Center, went to the desk and handed a note to a nurse.

The note described the shortcomings of the child and gave his name. The note also stated that the child was rude and out of control.

The child had a small bruise on his right arm, caused by being hit with a spoon. Scherrer told police that she believed she was simply taking advantage of the Safe Haven law.

The Safe Haven law allows parents to abandon newborn babies up to 3 days old at designated areas.
