A mother of several children went on a wild shopping spree after believing that she won the lottery before being arrested, police in France said.

Haut-Doubs police said that they have arrested the 46-year-old woman after being accused of issuing thousands of dollars in checks that bounced.

The woman was charged with fraud and theft.

According to the police investigation, the woman, who was not identified, went on a wild shopping spree, buying perfumes, luxury bags and items for her house after believing that she won the lottery.

When her husband realized that the lottery has not sent them their winnings, he checked his wife’s ticket and realized that she has not won the jackpot as she was off by a digit.

Meanwhile, all the checks bounced, and the retailers notified the police. When the woman learned that the police were after her, she burned her purse.

She then told police that a thief stole her purse and used her checks to make purchases.

When investigators reviewed security surveillance of the stores and saw that the woman made the purchases, she was arrested.

In court, the woman was sentenced to serve four months in prison, but it was suspended for two years. She was also ordered to pay the retailers for her purchases.
