(Scroll down for video) A drunk firefighter was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol after allegedly driving his truck to the scene of a fire while he was drunk, police in Mississippi said.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office said that they have arrested 34-year-old Phillip W. Gasaway, after being accused of causing a single vehicle accident while driving drunk.

Gasaway was charged with one count of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was booked into the Lee County-Tupelo Adult Jail, and his bail was set at $1,400.

According to the police investigation, Gasaway drove the large fire truck on County Road 811, when he went off the road and crashed his vehicle.

Gasaway told police that he was heading to the scene of a fire with flashing lights and siren when a small green car suddenly emerged in front of him.

He swerved to avoid the car and lost control of the truck. The truck veered off the right side of the road. A witness at the scene said that there was no cars on the road.

Police determined that the firefighter was drunk.

“Unity Fellowship volunteer fire department wants to apologize for this unfortunate incident. We would like to insure our community that the firefighter is no longer with us and we will continue to strive to serve our people to the best of our abilities,” the Unity-Fellowship Vol. Fire Department said in a statement.
