A groom was arrested on a charge of kidnapping after allegedly abducting a woman and forcibly marrying her without her parents’ permission, police in Nigeria said.

Ikoyi police said that they have arrested 30-year-old Ugo Madugba, after being accused of hypnotizing 28-year-old Nono Orji, who is a doctor, before marrying her.

Madugba was charged with one count of kidnapping. He was booked into jail, and denied bail. According to the police investigation, Madugba used hypnosis to abduct Orji.

He then persuaded her to marry him. Orji however, denied the allegations, saying that she wanted to marry her husband. She blamed her parents for making up the allegations after she refused to marry her cousin.

“Marriage has become a crime in this country, according to the police. I got married to him, but my father has been very distraught about it.

“He has used the police to threaten me to the extent of arresting all those who acted as witnesses at the marriage ceremony.

“My husband has been denied access to his family and friends, and information reaching us has it that his lawyer was also denied access to him.

“There is a belief that a plan to poison my husband is being hatched,” Orji wrote on her Facebook page.
